Let’s not be superlative, but mark the fact – yes, Veeram is an exceptional film in the career of Ajith Kumar. Over the past few years, we have been seeing Ajith Kumar in blazers with lots of gun shots. Thanks to director Siva (though the film travels on the lines of Telugu) for a changeover. This time, female audience can go watch an Ajith film and enjoy this cool family entertainer.
The film revolves around Vinayagam (Ajith Kumar) and brothers (Viddarth, Bala, Munish and Suhail). The eldest one takes care of them so much. The entire film is about their emotional bonding and how they come together for a cause of proving their love for sweethearts.
What’s special about Veeram? The story is so simple and we have seen a lot of such movies in the past. But Ajith Kumar’s new-fangled performance and the drama effectively enhanced by the screenwriters make it more appealing. The first half proceeds with racy and humour moments and post-intermission the momentum slightly drops, but has attractive elements for family audience with more characters appearing in the second half. The director maintains the usual paradigm of letting Ajith Kumar walk in slow motion, but it suits well for the script with right ‘mass’ factors.
Tamannah looks so beautiful and has shown some maturity in performance. Santhanam retains his standard of humour and keeps you persistently in laughter riot. The witty lines and his encounters with Ajith Kumar, Bala, Munish and other brothers are engrossing. The moments between Ajith Kumar and Tamannah are decent and the bullock cart sequence with the aged grandpa is nice.
Pradeep Rawat plays a miniscule role and Atul Kulkarni comes back as Ajith Kumar’s baddie again after ‘Arrambam’.
The background score by Devi Sri Prasad helps a lot to the screenplay, but songs do not achieve food standards. Cinematography is so enlivening and thanks to Vetri for an enchanting show. Be it cool backdrops of Pollachi or song sequence in Switzerland is done with panache.
Overall, Veeram turns to be a commendable entertainer that can be watched by 6-60 yrs old audiences.
Verdict: Full meals entertainer.
