Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam – Review

Ideas are endless and Parthiepan is always keen of bestowing audience with new themes and surprising elements in his films. After a long hiatus, the director comes back with Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam that as the title implying what this film is all about. The film has newcomers with Santosh and Akhila in lead roles with Thambi Ramaiah performing an important character. The film has cameos of Vishal, Arya, Vija Sethupathi, Taapsee, Amala Paul, Prakash Raj and many others.

An young team is in search of a story, which will introduce them to the world of cinema. Santosh has been deliberately working on the process, but isn’t finding the right one. He is already married to Akhila after relationship for few years. She is reluctant towards the entire working in their home and at a point of time breaks out. They are provided with a office room to write script and the girl at neighbour house eyes on Santosh. Unexpectedly, she is found hanging on ceiling fan and they are brought into interrogation. The girl with intuitions, some based on the real life of Santosh and Akhila prompt him to write a script envisaging Arya and Amala Paul in mind. The story is completed, but the producer is doubtful whether it would have a prompt response as the climax is different. Wait a second! It’s not just in the film, but this film itself has a climax that is new. Watch out for rest on the screens.

Hearing this story would really turn us engrossed. The experience is quite different and new while Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam on the screens, but it turns out to be little raw and dry in few places. But Parthiepan tries to giving a convincing hand in screenplay with some twists and turn. But that doesn’t prolong for a long time. The first half has no proper story, but the instances in the drama would be liked by some exceptional audiences, specifically the ones in showbiz for years. The second half has some gripping elements and the climax is worthy of appreciations. The performance of Santosh and Akhila are good. The problems revolving on them and the turmoil they undergo are very well projected. Thambi Ramaiah is extraordinary. Although there are many characters in the film, they don’t manage to sustain their prominence.

The appearance of Vishal, Vijay Sethupathi and Taapsee during the first few minutes of this film is really mind-boggling, but when we get to know it’s just an imagination, the pace of momentum drops down.

Musical score is okay and the songs are placed at inappropriate levels and the cinematography is done with good panache. Editing is little amateur in few places and the immediate cuts between the shots are too disturbing.

On the whole, Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam deserves special appreciation of a new innovative idea conceived by Parthiepan. But it is likely not for mass commercial film lovers and might click well at multiplexes.

Verdict: Cool, new and different film.
