It’s been a tremendous journey for Vijay Sethupathi with his three films – Pizza, Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Soodhu Kavvum turning to be back-to-back hits. Now, he is back with a fun-filled commercial entertainer ‘Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara’. The film is directed by Gokul of ‘Rowthiram’ fame and is produced by LEO Visions. The film also stars Ashwin of Mankatha fame, Swathi and Nandhitha in other lead characters.
The film opens with a fine day morning in Chennai and immediately shifts to various characters from different backdrops – Kumaravel aka Sumaar Moonju Kumaru (Vijay Sethupathi) is in love with a beautiful girl Kumudha (Nandhitha). Her father takes him to be threatened by local don Annachi (Pasupathi) and then begins the flasback on their own version. Then there is Balu (Ashwin), who is never liked by his boss (MS Bhaskar) and his girlfriend Renu (Swathi) is always on the urge of scolding him. While the story of these characters traverse through different situations, there are couple of muruders (Naan Kadavul Rajendran and Vinod), who commit a murder and steal the mobile of Kumaru to communicate. What happens next is a situation of these characters coming together at a point.
Director Gokul in his debut movie ‘Rowthiram’ had spread a strong message of fighting against the unjust. Over here, he shifts to the genre of complete comedy, but with a good message as well. The first hour of this film is laced with a lot of humorous elements. Although Vijay Sethupathi doesn’t appear throughout the film, the director has made sure that audience are gonna enjoy with other characters as well. Say for instance, the portions involving Ashwin, his colleagues, Swathi and boss MS Bhaskar are completely rib-tickling. The conversation between Vijay Sethupathi and Pasupathi are entertaining as well. ‘Naan Kadavul’ Rajendran made his debut in a villainous role, but is now scoring brownie points as a comedian. Over here, his encounters with Vinod (played an important role in Rowthiram) are enjoyable. Especially, Vinod has done a good job with his casual show. He can indeed look out for best offers and he deserves it more. Swathi looks lovely and her performance graph has improved as well.
The songs are a huge celebration to the audience in theatres and specifically, the ‘Prayer Song’ has been pictured with absolute impact. The actual story begins by the end of first hour and the characters on the run during latter part could have been little gripping. But overall, Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara stands out as a good entertainer.
Verdict: Stress-buster for all. Watch it without expectations.
