1. Singam II
This is something more off a rarity that hasn’t happened in Kollywood. Singam II is the first sequel in Tamil industry and director Hari holds special mention for making an effort retaining the same characters except Prakash Raj. Suriya-Anushka-Hansika Motwani trio combo worked out best results.
2. Biriyani
The film arrived almost by yearend and was a surprise winner in box office. In spite of the film’s release postponed more than three months, it won incredible reception across all the centres. Venkat Prabhu’s stunning screenplay laced with more thrill and suspense elements was a contributing factor. Karthi experimented with a new-fangled role and was applauded for it.
3. Vishwaroopam
More expectations and more controversies!!! At last Kamal Haasan become one among the pioneers spearheading towards 100-Crore club. The film was an espionage thriller that was into some issues, but managed to garner good response. The film’s sequel will soon make its way into theatres by mid-of-2014.
4. Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga
Director Pandiraj is always illustrative for his noble concepts in the films and this was not an exception. Starring Sivakarthikeyan and Vimal in lead roles, the film had a couple of beautiful actresses – Bindhu Madhavi and Regina, which was an additional attraction. Although the entire film was more on humorous concept, the last 20 minutes turned to be more emotional.
5. Ethir Neechal
It is a simple concept and Tamil cinema has seen so many onscreen heroes as sportsmen winning against the odds and getting the trophy. It was more enhancive to see Sivakarthikeyan getting into these shoes for the first time. The film also holds more attention for Nandhita appearing in a special role. In fact, she is worthy of winning more accolades for this role.
6. Varutha Padatha Valibar Sangam
This was a hat-trick for Sivakarthikeyan and he witnessed overnight success with this film. The film had a lot of attractions pertaining to the cast and crew. Sathyaraj played an important role and his combination scenes with Sivakarthikeyan was a good one. The dialogues written by director Rajesh made the film more colorful and entertaining.
7. Soodhu Kavvum
Director Nalan Kumaraswamy deserves more kudos and this was a genre that was reinvented after decades in the industry. The film gained more USP with Vijay Sethupathi appearing in a-40 yr old get up and the illusionary character of Sanchitha Shetty was a super surprise.
8. Pandiya Naadu
After many-many years, Vishal made a comeback with a box office hit movie ‘Pandiya Nadu’. While most of the other movies in the list were either a box office or critically acclaimed ones, this was a surprise for being a combination of both aspects. Director Susintheeran had crafted a perfect screenplay, which turned a simple plot into more effective ones.
9. Arrambam
While Ajith Kumar’s previous movie ‘Billa-2’ didn’t perform well in box office, this film had raised a lot of anticipations and of course, it had a mega opening. After a long time, Ajith Kumar had lots to perform on emotional and action quotients. He didn’t appear in blazers, but looked awesome in new costumes and looks. Director Vishnuvardhan’s casting and an ensemble star-cast of Arya, Nayantara, Taapsee, Rana Daggubati and many others made it more interesting.
10. Thalaivaa
Much alike Kamal Hassan’s Vishwaroopam, even this film faced some hurdles and had a delayed release. Nevertheless, it saved the producers and distributors from their ships being sunk. The film was a tribute to Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar and Manirathnam’s Nayagan as mentioned in the film’s credits. Sathyaraj and Amala Paul played their roles perfect and Ponvannan as baddie was a good choice.
